Canadian rockers Nickelback kick off their ‘Feed The Machine’ tour in Glasgow to a packed Hydro audience, and a great night of rock music was had by all. Supported on the night by last minute, but greatly received an addition to the bill, The Temperance Movement from Glasgow and South African rockers Seether, there were all styles of rock music on offer to please most music fans.
First up, The Temperance Movement. Fronted by Glaswegian Phil Campbell, the assembled band including Luke Potashnick, Paul Sayer, Nick Fyffe and Damon Wilson are no strangers to the limelight having played previously worked with artists such as Jamiroquai, Feeder, Rooster and The Waterboys. Their bluesy rock coupled with frontman Campbells raspy vocals are very similar in style to The 1970’s Rolling Stones and The Faces, Campbell flying around the stage in a similar fashion to Jagger and Stewart of that bygone era. A fantastic opening band tho, and well received by the crowd who maybe have been unfamiliar with their music. definitely, one to catch if you get the chance.
Second on the bill were South African outfit Seether, perhaps the heaviest band on the night and playing a harder, grunge metal style of music, reminding me of bands such as Bush, maybe even a hint of Pearl Jam in there too. They have a connection with the headliners Nickelback, having toured with them previously in 2009 on the bands Dark Horse tour. Again they went down well with the even increasing crowd, but Nickelback were who the crowd came to see.
Opening with the title track off the recent album Feed The Machine, they carried on with tracks encompassing their whole back catalogue, in fact lead vocalist Chad Kroeger commented on songs that the challenge on this tour was to play at least one song from each of their 9 studio albums, and this they achieved, much to the delight of the audience. Woke Up This Morning, Photograph, Far away and Too Bad followed on, each track welcomed by fans of the band, old and new, who were word perfect in singing along to their favourites.
Main point of the evening was the karaoke for the hit single Rockstar, 2 members of the audience invited up to the stage to sing along, and those lucky people could hardly believe they had the chance to belt out the classic song in front of thousands at the Hydro. They did very well, and after a selfie with the band, they were led back to the crowd. Animals and How You Remind me closed the set, before a well-earned break, with the band returning for a 2 song encore, Gotta Be Somebody and Burn It To The Ground.
A great night of rock music, covering most genres and keeping the crowd happy. Nickelback were most impressive on stage, great guitars and catchy lyrics, with Kroeger joined by his brother Mike on bass, Ryan Peake on guitar and Daniel Adair on drums. Well worth a night out, catch them if you can.
