American indie pop outfit Misterwives brought their latest tour to Glasgow on Sunday to the iconic King Tut's venue just outside the city centre, and the assembled crowd were in for a treat. Support on this tour was the fabulously talented Kimberly Anne from South London. Comfortable on guitar or keyboards, her self-penned music was a joy to listen to and gave the crowd a chance to hear her talents first hand. With a look not unlike the great Joan Armatrading, if her career is a tenth of what the great lady was, then Kimberly has a great future ahead. Warmly received by the crowd, she definitely is one to keep an eye on.
Onto the main act of the evening, the impressive Misterwives. Hailing from New York City and comprising lead singer Amanda Lee Duffy, Etienne Bowler on drums, bass guitarist William Hehir, guitarist Marc Campbell, Jesse Blum on keyboards and saxophonist Mike Murphy, the main band took to the stage with the ever increasing crowd all set for the evening ahead. A few chords into the opening track ‘Machine’ and Duffy bursts onto the stage from the side door to a tumultuous roar from the Glasgow crowd. 'Chasing This', 'Drummer Boy' and 'Only Human' followed on the evening’s setlist, Duffy bounding around the stage like Zebedee on steroids with an energy and enthusiasm that made me knackered just trying to catch her in my lens!! Let's not forget tho that she also possesses a fabulously powerful voice for someone so young and slight.
The music kept coming and the energy wasn’t dropping. The evening showcased music of a high standard: a blend of soul and funk influenced by Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, Abba and The Beatles, and no one could fail to be impressed by the talents of Duffy and her supporting band members. Those gathered behind the barrier showed their appreciation of the band, with a welcome I haven’t seen for many a day, and a roar between songs which gave the band something to keep the smiles glowing on their faces.
A short break then a 2 song encore - 'Imagination Infatuation' and 'Our Own House' - and the bands visit to Glasgow was over, but you can be sure when they return Mandy Lee will have a bigger stage to dominate. I hadn’t heard much of Misterwives before the gig but I'm sure I’ll hear plenty in the upcoming months. This band are going places, catch them while you can.
