VANCE JOY // O2 ABC, GLASGOW
VANCE JOY PLAYS SOLD OUT SHOW AT GLASGOW'S O2 ABC ON EUROPEAN TOUR
★★★★★
The evening kicked off with a fantastic performance from London born singer Lily Moore whose soulful voice had the Glasgow crowd in absolute awe as she sang her latest EP '17', her powerful voice reminiscent of the late Amy Winehouse.
As Moore's performance ended the excitement in the building grew, the crowd got louder and louder reaching a peak just as Australian born singer Vance Joy came onto the stage. His opening track 'Fire and the Flood' only excited the crowd more with its fast-paced chorus and catchy lyrics sending the crow into a sea of waving arm. The crowd sang back every word of the chorus which was on Vance Joy's first album 'Dream Your Life Away'. He then played 'Were going home' a song off his latest album Nation Of Two this track only brought more excitement and dancing out of the crowd as they loved every second of the song.
A personal favourite from the evening was the performance of 'Georgia' another track from the Australian singers first album, this song was performed with meaning behind it and had a strong sense of emotion. This song brought a sense of calmness to the crowd with arms being placed round partners throughout the crowd. After a strong emotional performance Vance (Other known as James Keogh) played a song at the complete other end of the music spectrum as he jumped into a cover of 'All Night long' by Lionel Ritchie, this went down an absolute treat with the crowd dancing and singing every word back effortlessly. Another surprise was thrown into the mix when the song was then changed into 'Sorry' by Justin Bieber, Vance then continued to change between the two for the latter part of the performance which was performed with energy and a massive smile as he seemed to love every second.
The evening was then drawn to an initial close with 'Like Gold' another track off the new album, its happy folky vibe had the crowd toe tapping and left wanting more as he and his fantastic band left the stage. The demand of the crowd was then met as Vance and his band re-entered the stage for one final time. With a smile on his face he started the encore with 'Lay It On Me' which was a massive performance and really showed his vocal capability which left various members of the crowd in shock. As this performance ended you could barely hear Vance making his final thank yous and goodbyes as he introduced the final track 'Riptide' which now has over five hundred and fifty million streams on Spotify! The ukulele came out and the sung began with the crowd harmoniously overpowering him. He smiled and laughed his way through the first verse and then let the Glasgow crowd sing back the chorus which sounded amazing and is something I believe everyone should witness. As the song ended you couldn't hear anything he said as he left the stage due to sheer adoration from the crowd, the singing of the 'Riptide' chorus continued long after he and his band had left the stage. A special mention has to be made about the sheer quality of his band who also had their own part to play in a great set.
Overall, it was another amazing performance from Vance Joy on his 2018 European tour and is definitely not the last we will hear of him and his music.
