TURBOWOLF PERFORMING AT STEREO CAFE BAR, GLASGOW - 10.3.18

★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)

Bristol band Turbowolf brought their brand of rock to Glasgow on Saturday night, and the audience - expecting chest thumping, leg stomping and head banging mosh pit mayhem - were not left disappointed.  Band members Chris Georgiadis, Andy Ghosh, Blake Davies and Lianna Lee Davies provided loud guitars, thumping bass notes and also strangely electronic keyboards.  This combination shouldn’t really work but it does, and mixing this with the power of Georgiadis’s vocals provided a noise not too unfamiliar to how a cross between Rage Against The Machine and The Beastie Boys could sound, a kind of heavy rock mixed with hip hop. The packed Stereo Café audience were plugged into the energy coming from the stage from the word go.

Opening their set with 'Capital X', 'American Mirrors', 'Cheap Magic' and 'Solid Gold', this was enough to get more than a hint of how the evening would progress; and the mosh pit which instantly appeared in front of the stage as if by magic, is a place for much braver men (and women!) than me!  Casual observers and gig reviewers were best placed at the side or further back, looking on to the massed hysteria building up as the band continued their set and the crowd went full steam ahead! Maybe 20 years ago I'd have squared up to the stage, but I'll leave it to the new wave these days.

This was one of the loudest rock music gigs I've been at in many a year, the mosh pit veterans would hardly disagree as they left weary legged and sweaty: staggering out of the venue as if they’d just left a battlefield, bruised by the sonic assault of Lianna’s bass and beaten by the drums and guitar of Ghosh and Davies.  And they loved every minute!  If you’re looking for a night out that includes extremely loud rock music, a thumping beat, a good old fashioned jump around with some head banging thrown in, you could do a lot worse than catching Turbowolf live.
