THE OVERTONES // YORK BARBICAN, YORK

Leaving the house on this freeing cold night to head out into town was not what I wanted to be doing but I was excited to see what the Barbican in York had in store for me as I had not see this act live before and I wasn’t sure what to expect.

The Overtones, a vocal harmony group discovered back in 2010 had talked about this tour as a Christmas Party and I can honestly say they certainly delivered that! The whole night reminded me of a perfectly decorated Christmas tree decorated in hundreds of flashing multicoloured lights, decorations some new and the ones that have been passed through the generations, baubles and shiny tinsel.
Appearing from behind a screen to a room full of screaming women, The Overtones kicked off the show with Womack and Womack’s “Teardrops” which got the crowd warmed up and singing  but by the second song “You to me are everything” everyone was on their feet dancing, singing and loving every minute.
The whole night was a mix of covers with a few originals thrown in so that the die hard fans could hear some of the songs from their latest self titled album released in October.

Creating such a feel good party vibe was top of their to do list tonight which made the moment they took it down to pay tribute to 5th member Timmy Matley who died earlier this year. Singing the Spice Girls song “Goodbye” I’m not sure there was a dry eye in the house.

With their impeccably timed dance moves and dashing good looks, it would be easy to say they are just another boy band but they are most certainly much more. Their flawless singing voices and witty banter between songs sets them apart from the rest as THE Christmas party band this year.... move over Buble, The Overtones are in town!
