80s pop Idol Rick Astley is back with a bang! Having retired in 1993, his comeback continues with a new album Beautiful Life, and this tour promotes his latest work. Tonight at the Glasgow Armadillo he treated the crowd to a fantastic evening, and took them back to the days of his classic hits. And didn’t they love him for it!!
Covering all his major hits from his first stint in the UK charts, and also some not so major, Astley opened with Try where he was up front on his own armed only with an acoustic guitar, followed by This Old House and the 1st leg shaker Together Forever. It may well be 30 years since his chart breakthrough, but Rick Astley still has the black suit, the quiff and his voice is sublime.
Continuing with It Would Take A Strong Man, She Wants to Dance With Me, before Hold Me In Your Arms, where a young couple approached the stage and were encouraged to dance away by Mr Astley. A nice touch.
The hits kept coming with Whenever You Need Somebody, new tracks from Beautiful Life, both appreciated by the large Glasgow audience and kept them on their feet all night. Age may be beginning to finally show on the entertainer with the odd extra wrinkle here and there but the voice is as good as it ever was. Deep, powerful and suits the new music perfectly. As good as the new tracks are tho, the crowd were there for the big numbers, and closing the show was his 1987 debut smash Never Gonna Give You Up. Every bum was off every seat and every voice was providing karaoke backing vocals on his 80s classic.
Rick Astley is still a major player in the British music scene and tonight confirmed that. An amazing voice, his chat and one liners between songs had the crowd in giggles and the music had them on their feet. Supported by Gabrielle, this was a thoroughly entertaining evening and definitely one to catch live if you can.
