On Mathew Street in Liverpool there is a wall of Fame where the names of bands who have played the world famous Cavern Club are chiselled into the bricks outside. Names such as The Rolling Stones, Ben E King and of course the Beatles adorn the brickwork and give a reminder to all who visit the city of the music heritage and culture that all who play the city’s venues have to live up to.

Heading to the O2 academy it would be beyond our expectations for tonight’s offering to compete with the more illustrious company of the Cavern Club but the fact the event had been upgraded to the O2 one venue due to unprecedented ticket sales was a good sign.

Firstly, a big thanks to support acts ‘Attic Theory’ guitarist Tim Cunningham for coming to our rescue when the ticket office had no knowledge of our arrival. A quick word with the right people from him and we were in and a good thing too as it meant we were able to take in the support act in full.

Attic Theory are a local band who, in their own words offer ‘Sex Groove Rock’ and from the off they hit the ground running. Complete with Megaphone to add effect, they grunged their way through an impressive set of songs including ‘Cold Hard Reality’ Saints and new single ‘My Own Design’. They even had time to show a slightly softer side with an impressive cover of Cyndi Laupers ‘Time After Time’ Attic Theory are the support act for this tour again in Bristol and if you are heading to that gig, get in early and see them. You won’t be disappointed.

So, onwards and upwards to tonight’s main event! Directly from Disgraceland please welcome Elvana, an Elvis Fronted Nirvana tribute. Sounds a bit bonkers doesn’t it and you would be right. Part of me wants to write here that there are no words I can use to prepare you for this and the only way you can fully understand what this band offer is to go see them for yourself. However that would make for a fairly short review, but please do bear those comments in mind.

The band play, the crowd roar their approval and then it happens and all reality is suspended with  as grand an entrance as you are ever likely to see. In full bright red Elvis jump suit and straight into opening number ‘Trouble’ we are off and running.

From the first chord this capacity crowd is on it and I can rarely recall such an atmosphere so early in any gig I have ever attended.

Hit after Nirvana hit follows as ‘Ghetto’ leads into Love Buzz followed by ‘Pennyroyal Tea’ and the whole place is in pretty much pandemonium.

If this sounds a bit gimmicky then it is but don’t let the costume changes from red jumpsuit, to white, to shocking pink for the encore, or the apparent collapse on stage of Elvis to be helped off for assistance by a crack team of burger vendors and narcotics dealers fool you. This band can play, and Elvis (Danny Cobain) can sing. They simply power their way through a full set list and even manage to through a few Elvis teasers into the mix for good measure.

At 6 songs the encore is one of the longest I have witnessed but it is still too short as all the big guns come out ‘A little Less Conversation’ seams effortlessly into ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ followed by ‘Come As You Are’ and ‘All Apologies.’

Quite simply when it comes to entertainment and good music this is as good as it gets and a night with Elvana is pretty damn well near as much fun as you can have with your clothes on and the next time I visit Mathew Street you might see me chipping away at the wall with a hammer and chisel.
