TIJUANA BIBLES // KING TUT'S WAH WAH HUT, GLASGOW

Tijuana Bibles headline King Tut's for the first night of their "Tijuana Weekender" presented by Jack Rocks.

First up were local band Dead Coyotes. They played a confident set without coming across as cocky, a hard line to walk for new bands. The off-kilter guitar chords worked well with the heavier drums to create a intriguing mixture of indie and heavy metal. The highlight of the set was 'Ellyn Fights With Bears' a song they dubbed "a dance number" from their 'Dogs Gold' EP. This band have a bright future ahead of them, make sure to check them out. 

While an odd choice from the promoter, next band Feet of Clay turned out to be a worthwhile one. Playing songs reminiscent of Oasis, U2 and Coldplay, they were a hit with many members of the audience. With six members and not much room to manoeuvre, there didn't appear to not be much energy emitted from the stage but it certainly didn't stop the crowd from dancing.

Powerful. Confident. Commanding. Tijuana bibles embody these three words; Tony Costello swaggering onto the stage with the confidence of a man who knows he's got the crowd at his fingertips. 

Despite the image they portray, the sound failed to deliver. The bass was overpowering and the guitar became lost in the mix, however the band's musical talent still shone through. Later in the set this issue was resolved to an extent, but often the band still failed to hit the mark. Songs like 'Apogee' and 'Crucify Me' were still crowd favourites and a cover of David Bowie's 'Cactus' went down well.

While the sound may have let them down, Tijuana's songs are expertly crafted, built to entertain and enthral. With shouts of 'fuck the Tories' their new material clearly has a more political edge. These new songs were greeted with roars of approval from the Glasgow faithful. 

With another night to go, Tijuana Bibles look set to smash King Tut's again. According to the band, new material is in the pipeline leaving fans with plenty to be excited for. For now check out recent single 'Pariah', with the video filmed in the Barrowlands with Donald Trump.
