The venue filled up early for the Hampshire trio, with local outlet The Ninth Wave opening the evening. Due to an issue with a review pass, I missed their set but still managed to make it in time for next band, Anteros.
Having previously been in Glasgow supporting Two-Door Cinema Club at the Barrowlands, tonight it was Anteros’ turn to take their new wave pop rock to a more intimate stage.
Lead signer Laura Hayden commanded the King Tuts faithful, slinging the microphone lead over her shoulder and effortlessly prancing around the stage. The band played new single ‘Drunk’ as well as older songs ‘The Beat’ and ‘Ring Ring’. They also played some new songs from their upcoming EP, out on the 14th of April, to get fans excited for the release.
Hayden teased the crowd asking “whose ready for breakfast?” before storming into the title track of their previous EP. Followed by ‘Anteros’, it’s clear to see this band are some talent. The performance left fans waiting in anticipation for the ‘Drunk’ EP out on the 14th of April, make sure to check it out once it comes.
It was Blaenavon’s turn to impress next, and singer Ben Gregory certainly made a first impression coming out with Avant Garde make-up slapped across his face. The opening song left a similar impression as well, with the band giving the vivacious performance of ‘Hell is My Head’.
Single ‘Let’s Pray’ came next followed by older tune ‘Into the Night’. Gregory showed his craftsman ship here improvising a solo whilst simultaneously managing to display some erratic dance moves to get the King Tut’s crowd bouncing.
The set didn't show any signs of slowing down either, with favourite ‘My Bark is Your Bite'’ coming next. Although playing with a simplistic set up of guitar, bass and drums, you don't feel the songs are held back. With some impressive guitar fills and bass lines, the set continues to deliver the drive the audience craves.
Unreleased single ‘Lonely Side’ is next with Gregory telling the crowd the song will be available soon. The song gets the crowd hyped for the forthcoming album ‘That’s Your Lot’ and the energy is continued with ‘Alice Come Home’.
A member of the crowd then complimented Gregory’s eye make-up, to which he initially seemed confused, yet laughed hysterically after discovering what the weegie accent was shouting. The moment showed the nice intimacy the gig had, which is always the case at smaller venues such as King Tut’s.

Shouts of “here we fucking go” led into ‘I Will be the World’ and the slower ‘Swans’. ‘Orthodox Man’ has the crowd jumping again as crowd surfers are lifted over the barrier.
The set has now reached its inevitable close, but not before Blaenavon can leave their final mark. “You keep running through my head, swear so” is belted out by the band and fans alike as ‘Prague’ wraps up the evening.
Blaenavon have the crowd in awe as they walk off the King Tut’s stage. Their debut album is out on Friday the 7th of April and if this performance is anything to go by, its set to be a cracker.
