After Busted burst back into the UK music scene last year their new album, Night Driver was highly anticipated along with their current UK and European tour. After the huge success, last year of their “Pigs Can Fly” tour, demand is quite clearly still high for the newly rejuvenated band. The Modern Record went to the Edinburgh show in the decedent setting of the Usher Hall which was packed with eager fans, buzzing with nostalgic excitement to see James, Matt and Charlie and hear the Busted rushed onto the stage to a roar of excitement from the crowd, opening the show with the highly catchy "Kids with Computers."
A brand new, electro spin on the band's classic sound was immediately apparent, and the audience seemed to love it judging by their ear-splitting screams. Leaving no time to breathe, they seamlessly followed up with the synth-pop track “Thinking of Your.” The new material was well received by the crowd which wasn’t a surprise to anyone. Many of the fan base are 90’s kids who are now in their 20’s, having grown up alongside the 80’s synth tunes meet rock anthems from their parents and older siblings, Busted’s new sound was instantly appreciated.
The brand-new sound of the trio met the old-school classics most of the audience would remember from their early teens. It just wouldn’t be a Busted gig without the classics of “Air Hostess" and "Crashed the Wedding," which the crowd went crazy for, almost drowning out the band whilst singing along, reliving their youth. Things were turned down a notch for the rockier anthems of "Sleeping with the Light On" and "3am" - songs all more than a decade old but the crowd sang back every word with gusto. The charisma and love between the band and their fans has clearly never been lost throughout the years, with frequent chats, jokes and even a dance competition ensued by Matt Willis.
One thing is clear from the band’s exciting comeback these past few months; despite the decade long age gap within their absence, these guys have always known how to command the stage as well as thousands of their fans devotion. It has been a long time coming, but their new material has certainly been worth the wait; The Modern Record can’t wait to see what the future holds for Busted.
