Glasgow’s QMU was host to a night of chilled music on Friday. The band, Amber Run, came to town on their tour of their new album “For A Moment, I Was Lost” and played to a packed venue, with a widely varying age range. It was the band’s first time playing a show in Scotland for over two years, and this was clear to see as the venue was filled up just after doors opened.
The night began with support band Island, playing their laid back and chilled songs setting the vibe for the evening. Their set was very calm and composed however it was far from boring and the intensity of the drums and the strength of Rollo, the lead singer’s voice, was enough to keep the crowd interested in their set.
The new album by Amber Run, was the follow up to their first album 5am, has so far received a positive critical acclaim. The set started with “Spark” a song off the first album, which was a more upbeat style of music than the support band. People in the crowd were singing along from the start, and there was a lot of swaying. “Pilot” was next and kept the faster tempo going. The song “Strangers” was a more relaxed song that had really strong harmonies in the chorus which drew attention to the strength of the vocals in the band. Lead singer Will Jones commended the crowd for the singing voices after “Fickle Game” as everyone was singing along to it. After the song he mentions how weird the last fourteen months had been.
From their drummer leaving the band, to their label dropping them, he said that the song “Dark Bloom” was about their relationship with the new music. The set races by and as the songs go by they play more new music, “Perfect” being the pick of them, with its thumping build up and catchy riff in the chorus, it was one of the best songs of the set. The name song of the first album “5am” was a very tight harmonious song that all of the members of the band joined in on. “Noah” brought the buoyant mood back up, with a sound familiar to Mumford and Sons. As they came back on for the encore, it was clear that they had saved three of the best songs until last. The encore really epitomized what the set had included so far; catchy riffs, tight harmonies, as well as bold and audacious songs. “Haze” was the first of the three songs and had exceptional harmonies once again, which were apparent throughout the whole show. One of the crowd favourite songs had to be “I Found” which everyone sang along with as the song rang out; the crowd was rallied to sing it louder. The final song of the set was “No Answers” which was the best song of the set, and let out was left of the energy from the band. It got the whole floor moving and the room was bouncing to the finale.
The gig was a real success and was thoroughly enjoyable. It had moments of chill and relaxed songs full of heartfelt emotion, along with the strong alt rock feel to the rest of the songs. If you get the chance, go and see Amber Run.
