LITTLE COMETS PLAY SCOTLAND'S NEWEST MUSIC VENUE 'ST LUKE'S'
On a cold and dark night in Glasgow Little Comets brought their upbeat rock pop to St Lukes. It was the band’s first time back in Glasgow since supporting Catfish and the Bottlemen at the Barrowlands in March 2015, so there were a large number of people waiting to get in, especially as the doors opening time has been delayed by an hour.
The evening started with Eliza and the Bear, a band from London, taking to the stage. The band, who has toured around the UK on many occasions, noticeably opening for Twin Atlantic at their sold out Hydro show in 2015, played a quick thirty minute set and jumped through well-known singles such as “It gets cold” and “Lion’s Heart”. The crowd filled up during the set and as they finished of the set with “Friends” it was clear that people were really getting up for this music filled evening.
On the seventh date of their tour, Little Comets came out to rapturous applause as the St. Lukes crowd eagerly awaited the set. The slightly unexpected line-up change due to lead guitarist Michael Coles’s wife giving birth the night before the gig, caused no harm to the performance, as guitarist Ruben stepped in. The band, hailing from just outside Newcastle, played a variety of songs from their 4 albums, and even included some new tracks of the upcoming album “Worhead”. The set started with “A Little opus” followed by “Jennifer” which really highlighted the strength in the bands vocal harmonies. The set went by quickly and songs of the new album were played...
including their newest single “Common Things”. The catchy riff at the start of “Little Italy” got people moving and moved on from the slower first few songs. When songs of the first album “In Search Of Elusive Little Comets” such as “Joanna” and “Adultery” were played the crowd really got moving and a large section were bouncing. Lead singer Robert Coles paused the gig mid-way through the set to mention how happy they were to be back in Glasgow after playing at the Barrowlands. The high paced set took a slow turn when the song “The Blur, The Line and The Thickest of Onions” was played. “One Night in October” got the floor moving again, and as the set was ending it was clear that everyone had got their money’s worth from the show so far. The impressively strong vocals from Robert were apparent during the last song before the encore, “Effetism”.
As the rest of the band went off stage Rob told the crowd that he didn’t really enjoy encores, and he likes to stay on stage as he is there to perform the music he writes, and give all that he can to each performance. The set concluded with the songs “Woman Woman”, “Bridge Burn”, “Louise”, and was finished off by a suitably named song called “Dancing Song”, which got the whole room bouncing one last time.
Overall the show was very enjoyable, and even though I personally had not listened to Little Comets much before the gig, I came away from the show wanting to hear more from them.
