Icelandic rockers played an electrifying set to a packed Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow, this highly anticipated gig definitely met the expectations of the Kaleo fanbase with every member of the crowd having a fantastic evening. The evening was started with two fantastic support acts, the first of these being Billy Raffoul. The 22 year old singer/songwriter from Canada provided an excellent vocal performance with his music bringing nods of approval from the crowd.
The second support act and my personal highlight of the night was Judah & The Lion who came onto the stage with what seemed an endless amount of energy as they took the Barrowlands by storm with their upbeat and quirky style. Their combination of genres including folk, hip hop and rock meant that there was something for everyone, initially the crowd was unsure of the band but after a few songs and a fantastic rendition of 'The Killers' Mr Brightside the crowd was soon jumping about as if they were all here to see Judah & The Lion. If there was unsure of the band in the crowd they were soon won over with a quick cover of 'Loch Lomond' which won the hearts of the Scottish crowd. Ending on the bands most popular song 'Take it all back' made sure that the band left the crowd with something to remember with its catchy chorus, definitely a band I will be adding to my music library.
As the lights dimmed in the famous Barrowlands Ballroom the excitement reached its peak with 'Afternoon Delight' by Starland Vocal Band being played as the band entered the stage. Frontman JJ Julius Son came onto the stage with confidence as the band began their opening song 'Broken Bones' its bluesy riffs and vocals gave an insight of what was to come, Son's moody vocals and confidence on the stage provided the crowd with a strong and fantastic performance. The Icelandic four piece then moved onto the anthemic and intense 'I Can't Go On Without You' which was enough to make the hairs on your neck stand with its very dramatic ending. The band then played a few more of their rocky numbers including a personal favourite of mine 'No Good' which really got the crowd going with its catchy guitar riff, the crowd moved like a wave as the band began the final verse. After finishing the song Son compared the venue to being like a 'mini festival'.
Taking a break from the rocky numbers Kaleo performed a powerful cover of Nancy Sinatra's 'Bang Bang' which left the crowd in awe as it was performed to perfection with Son making it his own with his unique vocals. The band then performed the only song on their setlist that they play in their native language Vor í Vaglaskógi which was a magical performance and lead to various Iceland flags being raised. As the night drew to a close Kaleo performed their most popular song 'Way Down We Go' which really emphasised the vocal ability of Son as he sang the song amazingly hitting every note and leaving the crowd hungry for more of the bands bluesy rock and roll.
As the band left the stage the crowd stayed and began doing the infamous Icelandic 'Viking war chant' which became famous from the Icelandic football team, this was performed until the band came back onto the stage where they were met with adoration. The night was closed with the fast paced and heavy 'Rock 'n' roller' which sent the crowd into a frenzy with everyone jumping around having the time of their lives as the band threw every last ounce of energy into a sensational performance of the song. This was the perfect end to a wonderful evening of music, Kaleo are definitely one of a kind and have a quality that not many bands have someone I would highly recommend going to see.
